In addition to protecting the health and safety of consumers, farm workers, and bystanders, Dow AgroSciences is committed to finding ways to minimize the environmental impact of its products while still maintaining their effectiveness. We continue to work with regulatory agencies, such as the EPA, to protect the environment.
Pesticides registered in the United States have been subject to rigorous testing both in the laboratory and under field conditions in order to understand their potential environmental impacts. This includes characterizing their behavior in soil and water, determining the relative sensitivity of fish, birds and other wildlife to exposures, and developing and confirming labeling precautions to be following by farmers and professional applicators.
Chlorpyrifos is one of the most thoroughly studied products in terms of the wealth of information available concerning protection of wildlife and environmental quality. Dow AgroSciences has completed numerous studies of the environmental behavior and wildlife exposure and sensitivity for chlorpyrifos. Dow AgroSciences, in cooperation with U.S. EPA and state regulatory agencies, has used this information to develop advanced assessments for determining the magnitude and likelihood of potential impacts and to identify best management practices and precautions to accompany its use. These practices and precautions have been incorporated into product labeling that guides farmers and professional applicators in stewarding the use of the product.
Information from the available studies on environmental behavior and wildlife safety properties of chlorpyrifos is summarized in the following sections. How the information has been used via safety assessments to develop best management practices is also highlighted. Finally, areas of recent environmental interest related to chlorpyrifos and other insect management products are also reviewed. This includes considerations related to the protection of endangered species and recent challenges related to litigation and Pacific salmon.
